From humble beginnings…
Austrian born, Franz Gmeiner started his apprenticeship in Steyer, Ȕber Ősterreich from Meister Zellinger, where he studied to become an artisan butcher and finally became a Fleish Meister himself in 1957.
In 1964 when he and his wife immigrated to South Africa he was an accomplished Austrian polony maker and started working at Prima Meat in JHB before starting his own butchery in 1969 under the name of “Tedstoneville Butchery”. It operated as such for many years, being run only by himself and his wife Johanna where they produced some of the best quality cold meat and smoked sausages in the East Rand.
The abattoir where he used to buy his meat from stamped his carcasses as “DAN”. "Uncle Dan” from then on became his nickname.
Where we are today?
As he got older and closer to retiring, his daughter Hanni studied from him, learning his trade to perfection and with it all the same recipes he used from the start to produce the finest quality meats people have come to love.
In 2001 after his retirement Hanni took over the business and changed the name to “Uncle Dan’s Butchery”. The professionalism and eminent standard Franz Gmeiner brought to his business has been perpetuated by his daughter and his grandsons who now also work at the butchery making it the 3rd generation of top distinct meat producers.
Since the start of the butchery it has built up an unbeatable reputation as one of the best providers of premium quality meat products with everything being produced in house. Today most of our clients are second generation customers. Uncle Dan’s Butchery has become synonymous with quality and service, never compromising on either. Our passion for the industry makes us work tirelessly to strive to be best at what we do. We are also about family, laughter and memories, giving our customers the best service, making them feel like part of the family for almost half a century now.
